How do I get started?
The process for converting your licence is easy and only takes a few steps.
Converting your international drivers licence to a Victorian licence
If you’ve just become an Australian resident or permanent visa holder, under the Commonwealth Migration Act 1958 you are no longer considered to be a visitor. You may continue to use a current overseas drivers licence for 6 months from the date your permanent visa was issued (or the date you arrived in Australia if your visa was issued prior to arrival), however during this time you should convert your overseas licence to an Australian licence.
1
Have your documents and ID ready
- Your overseas licence (and a translation if not in English)
- Your proof of Australian permanent residency in Victoria
- Two pieces of documentation to prove your identity as required by the Victorian Government
2
Pass an eyesight test
All drivers must meet eyesight standards for driving, and even if you have previous experience driving overseas you will be required to undergo an eyesight test to prove that you meet the Australian standards.
3
Complete a medical test (if required)
If you have a medical condition that may impact your ability to drive, then you may be required to complete a medical test to assess your fitness to drive.
4
Pass a learner permit knowledge test
You may be required to pass a Learner Permit Knowledge Test as part of the process. If you do not convert your licence within six months, or if you allow your overseas drivers licence to lapse, then you will be required to undertake this test as part of gaining your Australian learners permit. We have a resource available for you to practice the test for free.
5
Pass a hazard perception test
You may be required to pass a driving test as part of the process. If you do not convert your licence within six months, or if you allow your overseas drivers licence to lapse, then you will be required to undertake this test as part of gaining your Australian P1 provisional licence.
