Tasmania Logbook Bonus Hours: 2-for-1 Lessons Explained
By EzLicence · Last updated 6 Oct 2026
If you're a learner driver in Tasmania, 80 logbook hours can feel like a lot when you're just getting started.
The good news? In Tasmania, lessons with a certified driving instructor count double towards your logbook.
For your first 10 hours of professional driving lessons, every hour you drive counts as two logbook hours. So, 10 hours behind the wheel with an instructor gives you 20 hours towards your logbook requirement.
And it's not just about building your hours. Professional lessons can help you learn safe driving habits, practise tricky situations, and build your confidence before doing more driving with a parent, friend or other supervisor.
Here's how Tasmania's 2-for-1 scheme works.
How many logbook hours do you need in Tasmania?
Most novice learner drivers in Tasmania need to complete 80 hours of supervised driving, including at least 15 hours at night.
You'll also need to:
- hold your learner licence for at least 12 months
- be at least 17 years old before sitting your P1 Practical Driving Assessment
- pass the online Hazard Perception Test before your P1 assessment
You can record your driving in a paper learner logbook or use the free Plates Plus logbook app, Tasmania's officially recognised electronic learner logbook.
Your supervisory driver must have held a full Australian car licence continuously for the previous 12 months and cannot hold a restricted licence.
And don't forget your night hours: driving between sunset and sunrise counts as night driving.

How do Tasmania's 2-for-1 driving lesson hours work?
For up to 10 hours of lessons with a certified driving instructor, every hour you drive counts as two hours towards your logbook.
For example:
- 1 hour with an instructor = 2 logbook hours
- 5 hours with an instructor = 10 logbook hours
- 10 hours with an instructor = 20 logbook hours
The limit is based on 10 hours of lessons, not the number of bookings. So if you book 2-hour lessons, five of them will use up your 2-for-1 credit.
Once you've used the 2-for-1 credit on 10 hours of instructor lessons, you can absolutely keep taking lessons. Any further instructor time simply counts towards your logbook at the normal 1:1 rate.
Using the Plates Plus app?
Even easier. The app automatically calculates your 2-for-1 instructor credit and adds it to your total once the trip has been signed off.
Your instructor doesn't need to download the app. They'll simply check their details and sign off on the trip.
Prefer a paper logbook?
That's fine too. Paper learner logbooks are available from Service Tasmania, and your instructor can sign off your lesson entries there.
What does that look like?
Here's a simple example:
| Your progress | Logbook hours credited | Hours remaining towards 80 |
|---|---|---|
| Starting out | 0 | 80 |
| Complete 10 hours with an instructor | 20 | 60 |
One important thing to remember: credit hours help you meet your logbook requirement, but they're not a replacement for building real driving experience.
The more varied practice you get—with an instructor and your other supervisors—the more opportunities you'll have to build the skills and confidence you need to drive safely on your own.
And even if you complete your required hours early, you'll still need to hold your learner licence for at least 12 months before you're eligible for your P1 assessment.
How to get more from your instructor hours
Because your first 10 hours with a certified instructor count double, it's worth making them count.
Start with a professional lesson.
Learning the basics correctly from the beginning can make practising with your other supervisor much easier. You'll also have the reassurance of learning in a dual-control vehicle.
Mix lessons with your other practice.
You don't have to complete all your instructor hours at once. Try a lesson, practise what you've learned with your supervisor, then book another lesson when you're ready for the next step.
Use lessons to work on tricky situations.
Roundabouts, merging, hill starts, parking or busier roads can all feel intimidating at first. Your instructor can help you practise these skills at a pace that works for you.
Keep a lesson or two for later in your learning journey.
As you get closer to your P1 assessment, another lesson can help you identify any skills that could use a little more practice.
Remember to log every drive.
Whether you're using Plates Plus or a paper logbook, make sure each lesson and supervised drive is recorded and signed off.
